I have found that if I don't get into the studio after a few days my mood will sour.
I start to question what I am doing and even say why not get rid of it all.
But then I realize I feel like this because I am not working, creating and imagining.
Thank God I can crawl into a book and at least use my imagination for a while.
I am obsessed with the Game of Thrones Series right now.
I haven't watched the show yet (no TV).

So say a little prayer that I get into the studio tomorrow, because today I am at home with a car in the Garage awaiting a verdict on what and how much this what will cost to get fixed, blah.

Custom work is challenging, but I find doing it over the exchange of emails even more challenging!
Maybe it's the perfectionist in me, but I just worry until I know for certain the recipient is satisfied.
I never feel happy it is exactly what they envisioned until I hear from them.
It could be perfect, but you just never know.

When this happens I feel like I don't handle stress well.
It really does consume me, it always has been like that, even while I was in school.
Not that I have had issues with people complaining about their pieces, not yet (knock on wood).
I just don't want anyone to feel jipped or let down, how horrible would that be!

It's a sunny day here in Portland, I'm shipping pieces to Old Salt Gallery in Camden and then I'm hopefully off to the studio before I have to go to the dentist, ick.

Working on a new necklace that should turn out to be quiet a statement piece!

Most of you may not know that my daughter is a Juvenile Diabetic.
I've thought and thought about writing about her condition and had put it off because I wanted to keep this blog all about my work, but now I think it should be about me too.
Diabetes is a huge part of my life now and always has been.
My oldest brother and Father are both Type-1 diabetics, but now with Olivia, it is so much more part of my daily routine.
The pictures show some of what Olivia has to deal with being a Diabetic and being dependent on Insulin in order for her to feel okay.
The two stickers on her tiny butt are there for us to change her Insertion for her Insulin Pump.
Can you imagine having to have a 2 inch needle stuck into your butt every three days?
Most times she takes it like a champ, the patch on the right helps with that. It is a drop of a numbing cream we put in place to help with the pain before we put a new needle in.
I'm not quiet convinced of how effective it actually is.
The other picture is all the necessary bits to get her insulin into the pump and then into her.
We should be given honorary nursing Degrees for all of this!

I'm not sure why I want to share all this now, Olivia has been Diabetic for almost 2 years so maybe I'm just finally being more open about it.
Although it seems like she never wasn't Diabetic since she was only 17 months when she got sick.
That' is what is hard to take, she never had a chance to be free of it.
And the way things are she might never be.

I'm going to be part of a show next month in Camden Maine at the Old Salts Gallery on the corner of Mechanic and Washington St.

I have been up to a lot lately, working with some gold bezels which I am loving, beads too and some new stones.

New work is slowly replacing older pieces as I try out new techniques and fingers crossed I get my Lapidary going this year as well!
I should be stocking up like crazy, but I just can't motivate like that, especially when we have snow and I can enjoy it with Olivia!

From November 4, 2011 through January 8, 2012.

And on Friday Nov 18th through Sat the 19th I will be at the Hands to Art Sale at Waynflete School in Portland, ME. A percentage of the artists sales goes to help raise funds for this great school.

Rutilated Quartz Sterling Silver Ring in my Shop

Love this ring, the stone is right up my alley, all black flecks in the Quartz.
I would love to try this with a mix of metals.
Like a gold band instead of the silver.

I recently worked with some gold wire for the first time.
I bought 6 inches for a project ($70). That was all I could afford!
Wow though am I in love!

It was so incredibly easy and quick to work with. I'm smitten.
I have more gold in my Rio shopping cart, I am just waiting for the guts to plunge on in.
Bezel wire for mixed silver and gold settings.

I just bought some brass wire which I am hoping to make some chains with for sterling pendants.
The warm color of brass is so inviting.

Oxidized sterling silver with a Variscite cabochon

I LOVE this stone.
It is the perfect minty green turquoise esque look.
As you can tell Variscite looks just like Turquoise sometimes.

Work has evolved.
I love making the bracelets and wearing them.
If I didn't need the money I would definitely keep the Variscite bracelet, but oh well.

I've also added an extra step to my process.
Usually I tumble, oxidized, buff and I'm done.
Now I tumble everything again after I've oxidized and buffed.
I get the aged, antiqued look that I love with a little shine.
The look you get after you have worn your favorite silver piece every day for years.

I have a ring like that.
The first ring I ever made actually.
It is scratched ever so slightly and shiny worn in.
Perfection.

Finally getting into working more and more in the studio.
It's so hard with the beautiful weather.
I am a complete beach bum and taking Olivia is always super fun.
The beaches in Maine are pretty special and I like to take advantage while the weather is nice.
I'm sure someday we'll move to somewhere more climate friendly, (we always talk about it).
But for now Maine is just right.

On another note, I got my Lapidary machine set up only to realize there is no motor!
I don't know how I let that get by me but it's no big deal.
All of this has taught me a lot about patience and about machinery.
I'm excited to find the right motor and get her going.
Soon, soon I promise!

Natural emerald in sterling silver.
I made myself a new engagement ring today and I love it.
Emerald is my birthstone (May) and I've had this one so I thought it was time to get myself a new ring.
The original is need of repair which is beyond my expertise.
It is an antique platinum ring which I cherish so hopefully I'll have it again someday.

I found out my ring size is a 4 and a half!
What am I a child?
It made me think about my perception of myself and size.
My own perception is pretty askew I must admit.
I wear a size 6 and small to medium in most other things, but I don't see skinny when I look in the mirror.
Which is so bizarre because I am obviously small to have such a small ring size!
I'm not in great or perfect physical shape, but I should be pleased with what I've got.
Which, most days I am, and seeing how small my finger is makes me think I am indeed smaller than I think. The idea of self image and the reality of it is so bizarre!

A Bust

The Old Port Fest was this past Sunday and I can't say I have much good to say about it but I'm going to try.
I did get interviewed for a local TV show about the Fest which was very cool.
My friend Doug came and hung out with me all day, which was amazing because he got me coffe and we just chatted.

The bad, it rained all day which kept people away and made for a dreary afternoon as you can imagine.

Another positive is that it gave me a chance to look over my work and get ready to send most of it off to Galleries and get new work going.
As far as shows go, I might not do any anymore. I'm just not a salesperson.
I approach people, I smile and chat, but it never produces any sales.
I have a couple more shows to do this year and then I'll re evaluate what to do about shows the next year.
I did get some great pistures of my display!

Galleries

Getting into Galleries is tough.
You have to find a Gallery you think is a fit, approach them in some fashion and wait for a response.
Most times I don't hear anything.
I don't get upset about that because, it is a shot in the dark and if someone responds then great, it probably will be a good venue for my work.
They like it, they want to see it and sell it to there customers.

But, when you do get into a space and they then return your work. That is a kick to the confidence.
I can tell myself a list of excuses why they didn't think it would work out, but it hurts.
When I received my returned work I did get excited, I have a show this weekend and the extra inventory is a big help!

I also found myself instead of freaking out, looking for new spaces to be in.
Nothing has come up, but I'm proud of myself for not giving into the self doubt and getting into a slump which could have easily happened.

So on I go, looking for new galleries and working hard, even trying out some new ideas and not giving up!

I haven't bought bead in forever (I use to have a problem)
But I had to go get some today for a bracelet for an old friend and I couldn't resist.
I only bought a few things, the Amethyst and Labradorite drops and a string of black Spinels I plan on using in a couple of pieces.

Well, I'm hooked again, I am all ready thinking of going back to the shop and getting the beads I wanted but tried to hold myself back from.

Things are starting to maybe, a little, settle down now that I have started my new job.
Maybe I'll even find more time to blog!

More time in the studio will come, hopefully, as soon as other things come into play, but it is coming.
In the mean time I have a couple pieces done and a bunch sitting on my desk awaiting done ness.
I often think about my work and why I don't make pieces that are more elaborate.
I love love love silver work with granulation, tons of wire work, soldered bits and bobs, but for me....well, I think part of it is finances and part is my style which I am finally coming into.
I know there are techniques I want to try that I will have time to try now so that will definitly be exciting to see , keep your eyes peeled!

D Rant

You know what sucks? Diabetes, that sucks.
Especially to have a 2 and a half year old with Diabetes.

It's suck an ever changing always fighting battle to keep Olivia even keeled and feeling good.
Like today, high numbers all day, which makes her feel grumpy and just not good.
Then bang, she runs around to play and work off the high sugar and wham, she's deathly low.

You just can't win, and it's not fair to her.
She can't just run around and be a kid without me hovering around and poking her finger to see how she is before and after each playtime and snack.
Can you imagine having to prick your finger all the time?
It hurts, and all the kids that have to do it everyday all day are troopers.

Sure she takes all the pricks and site changes like a pro, but there are times when she doesn't want anything to do with any of it.
Can you blame her?
I wish I could take it all on and she could just be her with out the Diabetes.

She never even had a chance, and she'll know no other way.

I know it has been a less than productive few weeks at the bench.
But that will change shortly.
I'm finally moving on to (hopefully) greener pastures.

New job starting at the end of the month, part time and more money!
No more babysitters, more time with Olivia, more time at the bench!

I have a grand plan in my head right now for a couple of big necklaces.
Of course, I have to come up with these right when silver is so expensive!

Big Weekend

So much going on this weekend!

First The Big Thaw on Saturday.
Starts off my year of Craft Shows, although I'm only doing a couple.

Then The Maine Mineralogical Society Gem Show. I have never been so I'm super excited to see what it has to offer and hopefully pick the brains of some of the vendors about my machine and cabbing!

No new work to post, some goodies are sitting on my desk waiting. Some beautiful Topaz like necklaces to come.

JDRF Charm Bracelet

This is the Charm Bracelet I made with the kids for the JDRF Gala and Art Auction in May.
Kids with Type 1 Diabetes like my daughter made the beaded charms and silver shapes. I made the chain bracelet and added a few more flourishes.

This is totally unlike anything I've ever made, but I think it came out great!
The kids did a great job and I hope I get to meet them someday.
We did all the work via email and Postal Service.

I got to sneak off to my Studio this morning and finish these cuties off.
I'm in love with the colors and simplicity.
They will show up at the Big Thaw next weekend on Munjoy Hill here in Portland.
It was great to work and listen to my old prog rock and work away.

Tomorrow I'm going back and hoping to maybe sneak in a couple of bracelets for the show as well as finish up the charm bracelet I'm making for the JDRF Gala.

Kids with Type 1 Diabetes like my daughter made beaded charms and I'm putting it all together with other doo daas on a handmade link bracelet.
I hope it helps them rasie more money to help find a cure for this condition.

Studio Move

Moved in, just needs a few homey touches, maybe a cute curtain for that window and a plant or 2.
I'm going to look for a stool on wheels and a table for my cabbing machine which is still in it's box, just not under the kitchen table!
I'm lucky to be able to share this space with a friend. I think we'll be able to swap ideas and help each other a lot.

Having everything out of the house is nicer than I thought.
Our kitchen is so much bigger, we even opened up our table bigger.

Now I have to devote time there and that feels good.
I was supremely happy to work there today and listen to my ipod (until it died)

next weekend I even have a client meeting me there to discus making some rings.
So professional!

I'll be even happier in May when I go part time at work and can get even more creating done.
Maybe I won't have to go back full time after Summer?

1 Year Anniversary

I've listed this beauty in my Etsy shop all ready and just been feeling less than inspired to post anything, or really, do anything lately.
Winter doldrums perhaps, yes, most definitely.
I was working out with my Hubby for a while and that lifted my spirits, but I slacked off horribly and now I'm struggling to get back on that horse.
I know I'll feel better once I do, motivate!

It's also the 1 year anniversary of Olivia's diagnosis as a Type 1 Diabetic.
She was just a year and a half old.
It was the worst day of my life, or really week because she got so so sick she was in the hospital for almost a week.
But now we check sugars, count carbs, change insertions like pros.
We've walked and raised money for JDRF and I'm working on a charm bracelet with other Juvenile Diabetics to raise money for JDRF.

I am sad about the whole thing, and try to do things to help, but really the whole situation is sad. Olivia never got a chance to be her without Diabetes.
She might have it easier than someone who was diagnosed later in life, in that she'll know no other way, but really, why does she have to know this way at all?
Why does anyone?

1 year down and who knows how many more until a cure is found.

Last night when I got home from Yoga look what I found taking up most of my kitchen!
Poor Fed Ex Guy, this sucker weighs more than 70 lbs the box said.
I haven't really cracked it open more than you see in the picture, but everything on it looks perfect!
I have to set up a home for it and get cutting. I all ready have slab waiting to be cut

I'll be able to cut my own stones like these beautiful Picasso Jasper's and Chrysoprase.

Maybe it's the winter doldrums, but I feel the need to refresh.
Maybe a new haircut, and new color?
Something bright and sunny, I'm wearing way too much grey and black these days and I feel like my hair has gotten darker and darker.
I use to be a natural light and sunny blonde! Where did it go?

Yeah, I need a refresh button, like the one on your computer when things don't load right.
I could get new clothes, new look and just maybe, feel a little brighter.
Sigh.

I do love this guy, Beryl Aquamarine is the softest blue green white color, hard to capture in photo.
Getting over being very very sick so I haven't done much new work.
I have however caught up on all the repairs and things I was asked by people to do over the Holidays.
Phew.
Hopefully some new work will emerge this weekend.
I'm also getting together a piece that other hands will help me with. I offered my aid in a Fundraiser for Type 1 Juvenile Diabetics and they have asked me to make a piece of jewelry with kids that have Type 1. My daughter Olivia is a Type 1 Diabetic, diagnosed at 17 months.
I would do anything to help in this cause.

The seller told me it is called, Varicoise. But I can't find any information about it except that I believe him and he said it is from Nevada.

And now the new year is about to begin.
My goals, a couple. Get in better shape. Walking to work or riding my bike more, keeping up with Yoga, and eating a little better.
Letting the people in my life know how important they are more often.
Getting my business more off the ground.

I wasn't prepared this Holiday season for the Galleries I am in to be so busy.
I'm keeping up, but I wish I had more time.

I feel like I'm getting close to either working part time, or quitting.
If it wasn't for the need for health insurance for both me and Olivia I would have been gone all ready.

I'm going to be another shop too!
Maine Maven in Orono will start carrying some of my work.
Exciting!
Now to finish my Christmas cards, make my friends engagement ring and stock up on new work for the Galleries and Etsy, phew.

It was probably the easiest tattoo I've gotten done.
Which of course makes me want to get another one.

Holidays

Thanksgiving went by like a blur. As usual we all had to get home asap to get back to work.
Jeff and I have always worked hard, and we get by, just barely.
Jeff is a baker, which means the Holidays are his super busy time and we usually have to stay close to home.

Aquamarine and Agate

Amazing Aquamarine Mined in Maine by the guy whose been teaching me to cab. He said the shape was the natural shape of the stone as he found it. He just domed the top and shined it up. Not bad. It is a stunner, the color didn't really come through in the picture.

This ring is one that I cabbed from slab with the help of Jerry! Mexican Sagenite Agate. What a beauty, it was all grey and dirty and then all this came out!
These are both in the shop now.

I have a slight obsession now with making rings.
Mostly because I love wearing them right now.
You get to look down and admire a striking stone.
Meditate on its pattern, origin and how it came to be the way it is.

Going to cab some more stones this Sat, can't wait.
I would get the equipment toot sweet if I had the space and time.
I am looking into getting my own, but I'm going to take my time and do it right.
I always get excited about something like this I usually over invest in all the wrong tools.
Patience is a virtue (that I'm learning!)

Cabochon Cutting

So I have totally fallen in love with this process.
What a joy it is to take that rough slab and make something so pretty.
It was pretty to begin with but now!
I just have to decide what to make with my pretty cab now.

Jerry, who showed me how to cut this cab was the nicest!
He has a small, and the only shop, in Saco called Jerry's Gems.
It is a dying craft, and hopefully with his help I'll be able to add it to one of my skills.

New Work

This ring is kind of an ode to my daughter, because everything she has is pink!
It all started at her baby shower. I got a ton of clothes and everything was variations on pink.
we've kind of just kept up with it.
Oh well.
Pretty pink Rose Quartz with a pretty Ocean jasper.
Another double ring, I love this design.

The bracelet was a pretty new design I wasn't totally in love with.
I tweaked it a bit and will do another tweaked even more.
But it did sell the same day I listed it, so it couldn't have been that bad!
Not that I didn't love it, I just know it needs something a little better, different.
Next time.

Aquamarine Beryl

New Aquamarine Beryl in the shop.
Size 7 and a half and simply framed to show off the subtle streaks of white in this minty green stone.
The photo doesn't do the color justice.

So now that I'm on my way to learning how to cut my own cabs, I want to buy all the pretty slabs of rocks I see!
From one addiction to another.
I think the real problem is that when it's slow at work the only thing to do is read blogs, books online and SHOP!

Right now I'm hunting for the perfect slouchy black leather boot.
No heels, I use to love wearin heels, but I just can't do it in my everyday.

I think these are going to be the ones.

After pouring ( actually still pouring) over books and reading blogs about others who have done it, I have finally arranged to take a class in cutting my own cabochons!

I even bought a slab to start on.
I loved the soft feathery colors, especially the pink tones in this beautiful piece of Regency Plume Agate.
I am beyond excited. I know this will be a new obsession, I all ready can't get enough of the books I've looked at.

Class starts the Sat after this one, I promise to take pictures of the process!

Ho Hum

Things are moving along, but also kind of ho hum.
Happy with my new pieces, I'm loving making the cuffs. It's a totally me style, rough, statement pieces that make you feel tough (even though you really are a softy).
My camera was doing something kinda weird so I have to retake these photos.
My camera is old!
Probably about 10 years old. The rechargeable batteries I got with don't even hold a charge anymore.
I'm just putting off getting anew one, because I also need silver and the price just keeps going up and up!
Maybe a Christmas gift, eek the holidays are coming!

Bracelets

I do love me some cuffs.
I usually make them too big for myself to make sure I won't just keep them.
Like this one.
I'm sure it fits a normal being, but I'm perhaps a bit smaller in some areas than most other beings.
Like my wrists.
Another cuff is in the works, this time with an amazingly round and patterned Calico Lace Agate.
The above stone is a Blue Quartz with sparkles of Pyrite.
I'm dying to learn to do my own cabbing.
Nowhere to put the equipment, but I'm going to find a class.
That's my goal this winter.

These are some pretty pinkish Unakite cabochon earrings I made. In the shop and on sale like the rest of my shop in celebration of my Etsy-versary.
I'm keeping everything on sale until Monday, partly because I need the money and partly because well, why not?
I used the Etsy On Sale tool website thingy and it was sooo easy I can't even explain.

What a serious splurge, but I couldn't help it.
This stone has everything I love. Grey and black swirls, big size, oval, and sparkles!
I'm excited to get it and make something awesome with it. I'm thinking big necklace with a crazy handmade chain.
But the price of silver, my god.
It's crazy, I can remember when it was about $10 an ounce, now it's almost $22.
So when you look at a piece of handmade jewelery think of that!
I can't even afford to buy my usual bulk of wire I need.
Sigh, I guess I'm lucky if that's my one concern!

Fall Means New Clothes

My current obsession. I can't afford them, but maybe, if I save a little.
I'm also trying to save for a new tattoo. An ode to Olivia, art nouveau inspired with morning glories.
Can't wait. My first tattoo with color too!
Morning glories just scream vibrancy when they bloom. I'm thinking purple.
Love purple.
No new work to post as of yet. We changed our schedules around so Jeff could work at night instead of waking up at 3am everyday. he bakes bread.
Things are settling down now, and I actually got to work on a few pieces last night after dinner while Olivia played.
So nice, I wish that could be my entire day.
I envy, it's not pretty, but I do.
I envy the people that don't have to work another job and then craft.
I envy the people that can be with their children all day through the good and bad.
I envy the people who have time to create freely and improve their work and business.
I feel as if I'm coming to the end of my rope in some regards.
I know the path I'm on needs to take a turn, so hopefully I can find the strength to go the right way.

New Goodies

My god what an insane month it has been!
Visits with friends, family, birthdays, Jeff's and Olivia's, the Juvenile Diabetes Walk (we raised almost $2000!) and now it's over.
Phew. It was crazy and fun and it made the month go by so quickly.
Olivia is 2 now! So crazy. It only happens once and then poof. She talks more and more everyday, it's pretty amazing.
We got her a small tent for indoor and outdoor use, it's super fun to sit inside with her and her babies and have a tea party.

Chalcedony and Labradorite earrings in the shop now.
Hopefully more goodies will be made now that things have settled down and I have to prepare for shows and such.
A moonstone ring for my friend Kim is in the works!

I updated my website. I had traded pieces for the images on my previous website, which were perfect for that time.
But now my work has taken a completely different route, so new website, here.
I'm pretty happy with it's simplicity.
The pieces in the image on the website are 3 custom orders I did for a super lady.

New in the shop is this pretty red horn coral and agua nuva agate from cabbingrough on Etsy.
They are super cabbers and the rings came out super cute.

Phew, i get cranky when I don't create, just ask my husband!
But the silver came in the mail yesterday and I got straight to work.
I've been dying to make this double set stone rings. One stone is set on the end of each ring shank.
I haven't rocked the bezels around the stones yet, but they're looking good!
I think I'm just in love with the color combination's!

I Have Issues

As you can see I have quiet the collection of cabs, and it keeps growing. I try and save my money, and I do for a while, but then I see something I just have to have and it haunts me.
So, eventually I buy it and add it to the others.
Playing in the stones is Olivia's favorite thing to do.
While on vacation it was the one thing she would sit still for.
Yes, I brought my stones on vacation, I had to let my friend pick out a few for some special pieces for her.
She picked out some pretty ones too.
Ahh, it's so super calming to play and look at these, and it's always an event when I get one in the mail.
Olivia and I sit together and open the package, so much fun.
I hope something comes today!

pretty Amazonite earrings that I never got to blogging about. In the shop.
I'm currently out of silver at home which is a bummer.
I'm trying to decide wether to order alot, or just buy a little to get a few projects done.
It's hard, I have alot of work finished and ready to got to shows, but I also have Galleries asking for pieces and I have to keep my Etsy. Hmmm.
I also don't like the idea of all my money tied up in supplies, but it seems inevitable.
I have a ton of cabs, and when I look at them lately I see the money I spent.
Sigh.
I guess I have to swear off buying cabs, that should help!

New Directions and Such

I love the work I'm doing for the winter shows and such. New chains, made again by myself and new compositions with the stones. Mixing up stones together, experimenting with color and such.
It's fun, I had a hard time after vacation getting back into things, but I got some books to inspire me and viola!
A couple of rings are coming involving turquoise and picture jasper together. Blue and brown, what a lovely combination!

After a week of vacation it's hard to get back into the swing of things. I always need a project to get me going so, I'm making a necklace and earring set for a good friend and a couple other goodies for the shop. I also have to start getting ready for my holiday shows. I'm doing about 4 2 of which I have to send work to.

I was really inspired by the work of Diane Weimer whose work I saw in the Lark book 500 Gemstone Jewels. What a book! I'm going to buy myself a copy as soon as I can. I could look through that and find something new every time.
The 2 top pictures are the piece I'm creating inspired by Diane, aquamarine with a nice filigree wavy setting. Should be a beauty and hopefully done to be shipped off to a holiday show!

Diabetes Sucks It

My little girl was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 18 months. Now her life is a serious of needle pokes and food monitoring. No one should have to go through this, especially at her age.
No, she won't grow out of it, if anything it will get worse before it gets better, unless there is a cure.
I'm planning on walking to raise money to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

This is a sad sad disease that effects too many people.
Please help us out to raise money!

Maybe I should wait to post until tomorrow, but the cuffs are almost done. As I write they are sitting in their air tight container with Mr Egg oxidizing. So hopefully tomorrow they'll be set and done!
Things are getting bust here, I was contacted about another custom order and I have to get pieces to the Monkitree, Maine Center for Craft and Trinket and Fern in the Old Port. A few more consistent sales and Galleries and maybe, just maybe someday soon I won't have to work full time at a rather tedious job.
The first image is a custom order for an old friend, but the second cuff is up for grabs! Nice Agate for that one.
